Tonight I (forced myself to) attend the 1st meeting of the LA LGBT 4-week activist mobilization. (I’m an extroverted introvert and when I can’t force any of my friends into coming with me to events I have an EXTRA hard time going. Strangers aren’t my thing until I’m in their presence and forced to interact with them, then they’re not so bad.)

ANYWAY the event was great, like truly great – here are some useful notes for activists who live outside LA or who wanted to attend but couldn’t.
What can we do to resist RIGHT NOW? How do we have an impact?
Those are two questions progressives have had a time answering as of late – and for good reason. This is going to be a long fight, and with Trump signing executive orders and making big changes in seconds, it’s hard to keep fighting for a cause that you know will take weeks – or months – or hell, even YEARS – to make a difference. But over these next 4 years we’re going to HAVE to just keep swimming.
To combat this political depression (I know that sounds horrible, but as someone who has struggled with depression and knows what it’s like – I can tell you political depression is a real thing, you’re not alone, there are 4 things we need:
- A team
- Know what’s at stake
Paul Ryan is about to try to pass a “Budget Reconciliation Bill,” which would repeal the ACA, Medicaid & defund Planned Parenthood. 50% of clients at the LA LGBT center are on Medicaid, and 20% U.S. residents will be affected by this bill. So, what can we do?
3. Practice key mobilizing skills
We need THREE – yep, just 3 – Republicans in the Senate to vote NO on Ryan’s bill so that the Democrats in the Senate have enough support to defeat it. The LGBT center is organizing call centers where volunteers can make calls to constituents in areas with Republican senators and patch them through to their senators. All the volunteers do is encourage constituents to act and give them the opportunity to do so.
4. Sign up to take strategic action
There are many dates you can volunteer. Here are the main ones:
- Tuesday, March 7th 6:30pm-9:30pm
- Sunday, March 12th 12:00pm-4:00pm
- Sunday, March 19th 2:00pm-6:00pm
- Wednesday, March 29th 5:00pm-9:30pm
Address: 1125 N McCadden Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90038
