Mesa Rally for Justice for Daniel Shaver/Protest Against Police Brutality Planned

(Dec. 13, 2017—Mesa, Arizona) A rally protesting the acquittal of Mesa Police Officer Philip Brailsford — who shot and killed Daniel Shaver in January 2016 — will be held at Mesa City Plaza, 20 E 1st St., at 4 p.m. Dec 21. This rally is the latest in a nationwide movement against police brutality, but it’s the first for Daniel. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend.

Brailsford shot and killed Shaver, of Granbury, Texas, on Jan. 18, 2016. Two months later, the Mesa Police Department fired Brailsford, citing several policy violations that included his engraving of the words “YOU’RE FUCKED” into his rifle dust cover and overall unsatisfactory performance. On Dec. 7, 2017, a jury acquitted Brailsford of all charges after a six-week trial. It wasn’t until after the trial that the full, unedited body camera footage of the shooting was unsealed by the court, causing widespread outrage. The video shared by New York Post writer Shaun King alone has been viewed more than 1.3 million times.

Cities around the nation have rallied on Daniel’s behalf, and now we let Mesa know we will not stand idly by. We denounce the acquittal of Brailsford, demand he not be given his job back, and stand with all the victims of police brutality across this nation.

We have the support of Daniel’s wife, Laney Sweet, the endorsement of Black Lives Matter PHX, John Brown Gun Club (Redneck Revolt) Phoenix, AZ Resist and Copwatch and have partnered with the Justice for Daniel Shaver movement, Refuse Fascism, Moms Demand Action AZ, Indivisible Phoenix and more.

Confirmed speakers include: Deedra Abboud, a Mulism Arizonan who has made headlines in her run for Jeff Flake’s Senate seat, Michael Lynell, President of Black Lives Matter PHX, JJ Johnson, President of the Black Phoenix Institute, and Scott Sefranka, a medically retired Phoenix Police Officer.

The Mesa protest and vigil will call on all of Arizona police departments, but specifically Mesa Police, to reform their organizations. We maintain that Brailsford should never have been given a job with Mesa PD, nor should police be allowed to shoot and kill citizens with such reckless abandon.

“The Black Phoenix Institute will be there to discuss the policies and training that created the monster of Brailsford,” JJ Johnson said. “There is no daylight between training him to be a badge carrying street monster and training a pit bull to fight. It is essentially the same thing.”
